• EV battery health ‘must’ join mileage and age as key used car valuation metric

    The battery health of electric vehicles (EV) “must” join age and mileage as a key used car valuation metric, but new legislation might be required, it has been claimed.

    Speaking ahead of a July 27 update of Auto Trader’s Road to 2030 report, brand director Marc Palmer told AM suggested it was inconceivable that an EVs available range would not play a part in its residual valuations.

    But Cap HPI director of valuations Derren Martin said that efforts to gain the necessary data from OEMs was proving “difficult” and suggested that new legislation could be required to compel EV makers to share the data.

    Auto Trader brand director Marc Palmer and Cap HPI head of forecast strategy Dylan Setterfield on the AM News ShowPalmer, who recently discussed the EV market on the AM News Show podcast, said: “Consider, for example, a Nissan Leaf at 40,000 miles. One advertised car could have a battery health of 90% while another has 80%. That hugely impact the range of the car and its worth in the eyes of a well-informed consumer. At some point it will have to play a part in valuations.

    “The way a car is charged plays a huge part, with rapid charging taking a toll on long-term battery life, but the consumer that has researched a car online and referenced its original claimed range shouldn’t have to pay the price.”

    Customer care and transparency

    Martin, who updated AM on used car market trends last week, said that the addition of battery health in its used vehicle valuations was emerging as a priority.

    “It’s not something that most OEMs are happy to provide readily. We’re actively talking to people about it but there is a suggestion that we might need some new legislation to be passed to ensure that data is shared,” Martin said.

    He added: “If your neighbour buys an identical car to you but the battery health and range of your car is 10% less, you would want to have paid less for it.”

    In the current edition of AM magazine explore the effects of the shift to zero-emission vehicle sales on car retail.

    Martin Miller, the founder of car retailer EV Experts, claimed that his business had formulated its own method of figuring out used EV battery range and said it prided itself in advising buyers on a car’s “real-world” range.

    Miller said: “If we sold a 2016 Leaf which had a 120-mile range, you could easily sell that as a 100-mile range car. If you advertise used EVs as having the same range capacity as new you’re going to have some unhappy customers.”

    Former Hyundai Motor UK president and chief executive, Tony Whitehorn, now a consultant assisting OEMs and car retailers, told AM that the bulk of battery degradation happens after the first six years of an EV’s lifecycle.

    Tony Whitehorn, TW ConsultingHe suggested that developments in battery production techniques – particularly the introduction of Nickel and Cobalt, along with the promise of solid-state batteries in future – were reducing the impact of degradation.

    But he conceded that rapid charging continued to take a greater toll on battery health and added: “EV owners need to be told that they should be charging their vehicles to 80%. Extended a charge beyond this point also has an impact on battery life.”

    The way car retailers inform their customers, describe and sell cars will only become more of a divisive issue if battery health does not become a more transparent valuation metric.

    Growing used EV car parc

    Palmer said that, by 2025, there would be four-times as many used EVs in the UK car parc than there are today and more price-conscious potential buyers have yet to enter the market.

    Around one-in-five Auto Trader searches are now for an EV, which is four times higher than it was a year and a half ago, Palmer said. But he added: “We have not seen any shift in the demographic of people looking at those cars. What we want to see is more mainstream buyers with normal budgets looking at EVs, but that’s not happening.

    “Demand is principally still being driven by the wealthy. That’s probably no surprise given the sticker price of EVs.”

    Palmer said that 36% of views on Auto Trader are for cars under £30,000. At that value potential customers have a choice of 175 different petrol and diesel car models to choose from, but just 26 EVs.

    Price parity, which Palmer believes could be achieved between 2024 and 2026, should bring significant running cost savings for EV owners.

    Palmer said that the soaring cost of petrol and diesel had seen a previous running cost reference point of around £140 per 1,000 miles had accelerated to £176 more recently.

    But he added: “Unfortunately that isn’t because the EVs are getting cheaper.”

  • 2024 Subaru Forester EV Rumored to Use the Same Dual Electric Motors Setup From the Solterra

    The next-generation 2024 Subaru Forester will reportedly debut sometime next year, borrowing the same electric setup from the Solterra model. Besides that, the new SUV will also come with a refreshed design language, and with more modern interior.


    In case you missed it, the current Solterra model is using a dual electric motor, one for each axle, creating an all-wheel drive. Combined, this SUV is able to produce an output of 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. The exact changes details are still not official but let’s read along to find out more about the upcoming redesign of one of the best-selling company’s SUVs.

    Will the Subaru Forester Be Redesigned?

    Like the latest Subaru flagship SUV Solterra, the new 2024 Subaru Forester will receive the same design language treatment. So, the forthcoming compact electric SUV will look modern, and lavish, and it will dominate on the front.

    From many reports, it will receive the same closed grille, black plastic cladding, and more attractive headlights. Roof rails will be probably standard on upper trims, while 18-inch alloy wheels should be part of lower trims.

    Interior Changes

    Just like the exterior, we’re expecting to see many changes and upgrades inside as well. The new 2024 Subaru Forester will keep the same seating layout, which means that you can count on room for five passengers. The current infotainment setup of an 8-inch touchscreen will be replaced with a larger one, while wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, Bluetooth, and voice control are standard.

    Safety will be also better, and buyers can expect a much longer list of features. The current model includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, emergency steering assistance, pedestrian/cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist.

    At the moment, we don’t have official details regarding the engine of the forthcoming SUV. The new 2024 Subaru Forester could use the same platform as the motor setup as the Subaru Solterra model. That means we can expect Forester to be propelled by dual electric motors, one for each axle, creating an all-wheel drive as standard. Thanks to this combination, the Solterra can produce an output of 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque.

    It is also worth noting that it comes with a lithium-ion battery pack, which is floor-mounted. According to Subaru, the battery requires about nine hours for a full charge from a 240-volt source, or just an hour with DC fast charger. The maximum range of this model is 228. Anyway, we’re expecting to see a better output and millage with the new Forester. There are also rumors about the hybrid model as well, and it should reportedly borrow the same setup from the RAV4 Prime.

    Unfortunately, there is no word on how much could the new 2024 Subaru Forester EV cost. The current non-EV model has a starting price of approximately $25,000, so we presume that the EV could cost at least $40,000. The sales of the Subaru Forester should start sometime next year.

  • AFV owners seek GAP and warranty cover as financial concerns rise

    Demand for GAP insurance quotes and extended warranties for alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) is rising year-on-year (YoY), data from Intelligent Motoring shows.

    The company said it has seen the number of requests for GAP insurance quotes rise by more than 10% since 2018.

    June 2022 figures reveal a YoY increase of 3.2%, and the first six months of 2022 saw 86% more quotes than the same period in 2021.

    The company said AFV extended warranty quotes now account for 5% of all quotes, rising from less than 2% in the same period in 2018.

    Duncan McClure Fisher, chief executive officer (CEO) at Intelligent Motoring, said: “Whilst the reality is that AFVs accounted for less than 2% of the UK’s total vehicle parc by the end of 2021, new vehicles sales continue to accelerate at speed.

    “As these cars begin to age and filter through to the three-year-old plus used market – the core market for extended warranties – we can expect to see a similar rise in sales of EV warranties.

    “An uplift in demand for GAP insurance and particularly extended warranty, is encouraging, and suggests consumers increasingly recognise the value of add-on ancillary products that safeguard the health and financial integrity of their car purchase.

    “Pandemic financial fears, coupled with the rising cost of living, are also likely to have stimulated consumer concerns to protect disposable incomes and avoid unexpected ownership expenses.”

    The research follows after it was revealed that the UK’s cost-of-living crisis has prompted 63% of car dealers to change the types of used vehicles they stock to prioritise smaller, more affordable products.

    Intelligent Motoring data shows that some common repairs come in at up to 400% higher for electric vehicles (EVs) than their combustion engine counterparts.

    For example, a coolant pump repair for a BMW i3 – carried out by one of Intelligent Motoring’s registered and approved garages – costs £2,293.99 compared to around £400 at a franchise dealer for the same part on a BMW 3 Series petrol model.

    Meanwhile, replacing a single door handle on a Tesla Model S will cost almost £670 – the retractable feature being controlled by an electric motor – compared with repairing a simple door handle on an Audi Q7, which would cost around £245.

    Many reports claim AFV owners could see a 30% reduction in their service and maintenance costs if they opt for extended warranty cover.

    McClure Fisher added: “Many AFV owners are unaware that the shortfall in technicians qualified to work on EVs, alongside the higher cost of EV parts, is pushing up the repair bill when things go wrong.

    “This presents an income opportunity for retailers and garages who are EV-ready as they can help educate drivers on the value of both GAP and warranty cover for their AFV.

    “Not only could this save their customers considerable money in the longer-term but also build lasting customer relationships.”

    The UK’s new car registrations slumped to their worst June since 1996 after ongoing component supply issues contributed to a 24.3% decline.

  • 2014 VW Jetta SE 2.0T & Helios Tribute Car – SEMA Specials

    In what’s become a time-honored tradition, wild Volkswagens are built each year for the SEMA automotive trade show in Las Vegas, and this year was no different. Yet while we were responsible for creating our Surf Beetle Turbo (EC 4/13 & 5/13) for the 2012 show, this year we could sit back and take it easy. Although, we did give some input on the Jetta widebody created by Southern California specialists, FMS Automotive in Cerritos CA. The company decided to build a pair of badass street sedans to wow showgoers.

    The two Jetta builds would be very different. One would be easily replicated, while the other would be an over-the-top project to inspire the Euro community. We had the exclusive build and feature stories on both cars, which we posted at europeancarmag.com and euortuner.com before the show opened. This is a summary of those posts.

    Widebody

    All good stories have their share of trials and tribulations, and while most project builds tend to encoutner adversity inside the workshop, the Jetta widebody was almost derailed shortly after the concept was born. “You wouldn’t believe what we went through with the build,” said Gil Plasencia from FMS Automotive. “It’s come a long way in a short time and it was a fierce battle on occasions. However, the blood, sweat and tears were worthwhile once the car finally rolled out of the workshop.”

    So what happened? Parts didn’t arrive, hammer dropped on a toe, somebody forgot to tighten a crucial bolt?

    “This isn’t the car we started with. It was called into action when our first Jetta was destroyed by a hailstorm while being transported through a hail storm in Colorado,” he explained. “When we finally laid eyes on it, the car was destroyed. There was about $13000 in hail damage and the car was a total loss. Every panel was hit and the glass smashed. It was a huge setback for a project that was only months away from its SEMA debut!”

    Suddenly, the search began for a second car, after which an utterly stock 2014 Jetta SE 2.0T was dropped into the capable hands of Eurocode Tuning in Torrance, CA. These guys made quick work of removing the APR-fortified powertrain from the deceased Jetta and transferred it into the new car.

    The reason the original car was on a trailer at all was because under the hood was an APR stage 3++ built motor with a big turbo kit. It was rated at over 450hp at the wheels (500hp crank) on 93-octane gas and was returning from APR in Alabama to FMS in California when the storm happened. Perhaps next time they’ll remember to use a covered trailer!

    Inside the block there are APR forged pistons and connecting rods on a stock crank. It was topped with a ported head but the centerpiece is the GT3071R turbo on an APR manifold, software and ancillary parts.

    With the transplant completed, the second Jetta returned to FMS where it underwent its bodybuilding: “We wanted something that was bold but sophisticated. We tried to use as many OEM parts as possible, so started with a Golf R front bumper and added a custom splitter. We decided that the extra horsepower justified wider fenders, which would allow us to fit wider tires to put the power down,” Plasencia said.

    As a result, the car was widened in metal nearly 2″ at each corner, resulting in a car that’s aggressive, but not overtly so. The custom fenders were augmented by fabrication work to the Golf R front bumper and side skirts, as well as a GLI rear bumper, to ensure all the panels were aligned.

    Other OEM additions included a Jetta Hybrid grille and trunk spoiler, plus LED tail lights from the 2014 GLI.

    FMS then created a custom roof spoiler and its own door trims, before the car and its mirrors were painted the original white with a satin topcoat. The roof was finished in a contrasting gloss black to match the Golf R grilles.

    To ensure the swollen arches were filled, TSW Jerez wheels were specified in 19×8.5″ front, 19×9.5″ rear and wrapped in 245/35 and 275/30 Nitto NT05 tires, respectively.

    The TSWs had to provide clearance for a Brembo four-piston front brake kit that used 14″ slotted rotors. They were accompanied by Golf R rear brakes and the car sits on H&R Street Performance coilovers with matching Sport sway bars front and rear.

    Inside, the Recaro Sportster CS front seats were wrapped in black and beige hide to match the stock dashboard. The same leather treatment was bestowed on the rear seats, door panels, GLI steering wheel, e-brake handle, shifter and center console. FMS also created a rack in the trunk to house two Shoei helmets for track days, plus a TSW spare wheel.

    Hours before this 450hp Jetta widebody was slated to leave for the bright lights of Vegas, it was rolled into the daylight and to our photo shoot. “We wanted to focus on the details, to show enthusiasts the Jetta is a great alternative to the Golf and GTI platform. In some cases, I think it’s more versatile because the sedan can suit families better. I hope this high-powered approach will show people how great the Jetta can be,” Gil said.

    Helios Tribute Car

    In 1989, VW released one of its rarest production cars of all time, but it wasn’t a high-performance edition. Instead, it was themed on its Helios blue paint.

    With only 1500 examples of the 1989 Jetta GLI 16v in Helios blue, the lucky few who obtained an example had all the features found in a loaded GLI plus the exclusive exterior paint, color-matched wheels and special blue plaid inserts for the factory Recaros.

    “”””When we first explored the idea of building cars for our SEMA booth, I instantly suggested we build a Helios tribute car, simply because I owned an original and still regret selling it,”””” said Gil Plasencia from FMS. “”””The Mk2 chassis really spoke to you and the Helios cars were extra special with the blue paint and special interior. It was exclusive and something only hardcore VW fans would recognize.””””

    Keen eyes will note the tribute car isn’t actually Helios blue. It’s finished in Tempest Blue Metallic, which is almost a dead ringer for the original paint and is available on the 2014 VW Jetta, which helped to inspire the tribute.

    Before balking at the paint code, FMS could have painted it the original color, but preferred Tempest Blue because it’s available right now to anybody wanting to build something similar.

    Speaking of attainable, most of the glory goes to VW Accessories with parts like a body kit that was painted the gloss black and is a nod to the door moldings on the original car.

    FMS also fitted the 2014 Jetta Hybrid grille, trunk spoiler and headlights as well as 2014 GLI smoked tail lights.

    Of course, the original Helios car had painted wheels but FMS went with a ceramic finish on the 19″ VW Motorsport wheels, which are also available from your local dealer.

    Other additions include H&R Street Performance coilovers, Golf R brakes and GTI Recaro seats custom upholstered to resemble the original Mk2 Helios car.

    Under the hood is the new 1.8T motor, fortified with APR software and a carbon fiber Carbonio CAI. At the other end is a custom 2.5″ exhaust system built for FMS with a Magnaflow muffler.

  • 1999 Honda Civic Si – Penny For An Si

    The ’99 Si is a special year from the long running Civic family. A strong, almost cult-like following, it’s the Electron Blue Pearl version that is symbolic of the 1.6L coupe that boasts a high revving, 160 horsepower powerplant that a majority of would never consider swapping out for something different. Then again, Miguel Paz Alameda of Jacksonville, Florida, isn’t just anybody, and his EM1, nicknamed Penny, isn’t just any old car. The truth is, it’s because, as Miguel tells us, it left him with but a penny within his pocket, though if you’re anything like me, you almost certainly assume that the nickname is due to the car’s copper-like color.

    Miguel simply wanted more, as great as the original B16A2 is. More power, more torque, and with those of course, comes more money. To get started, a set of engine mounts would be needed for the K20A2 powerplant to find its new home. Simple enough, right? Well, at times, engine swaps usually become complicated matters. I did not determine what I was getting myself into. Everyone was telling me which kind of engine mounts to acquire. Miguel initially purchased some mounts that didn’t fit. Ultimately, he learned that a K-series swap in an EM1 called for any subframe from aMiguel contacted local junkyards in search of a subframe, but soon discovered junkyards aren’t too interested in selling just an intact subframe while there’s still a usable engine around the donor vehicle. While searching, a friend with a ’95 Civic sustained a major rear end collision that contributed to an insurance claim being filed as well as the car being totaled. If he was sure the insurance policy would not reject the claim together with the subframe missing. His friend said that it absolutely was not a problem, to accept the parts he needed, as well as not be concerned about paying for anything, the insurance company scheduled to pick up the Miguel and Civic states, I asked. I quickly came over in my truck, unbolted what I needed, and off I went.

    Another hurdle got in the way, as being the process continued. An incorrectly pinned aftermarket engine wiring harness complicated the final stages of the build. Further agitating the situation was the eight-month waiting period for the problem to be rectified. The electrical mystery was solved after Miguel with his fantastic friends worked tirelessly for weeks before an upcoming car show and they also were determined to have the EM1 up and running for the event. They tooled away until 3 a.m., napping before going to work just to return after punching out for the day. The crew performed a basic diagnosis; battery, gas and fuel etc., and unfortunately, the K20A2 did not run well. Fortunately, Miguel’s roommate was in the process of putting together a K-powered CRX. The team swapped sensors, Hondata K-Pro engine control units, and other vitals, but the Civic remained unchanged. Finally, someone chosen to swap the engine harness from the CRX with the Civic to see if wiring was in fact the issue.To Have An Si

    With all the guesswork and testing, Miguel was unable so it will be to the show and though the vehicle ran better, something seemed off-it was still running a little on the rough side. He decided to get the Civic tuned the following week, where his tuner discovered yet another wiring issue. That wasn’t the end of his wiring woes, even if this time the MAP sensor was incorrectly pinned. During the drag race event months later, the TPS sensor wiring loosened up, and although a quick fix in reality, in total, the aftermarket harness resulted in four operating issues and plenty of headaches.     1991 Honda Prelude 4WS Si – Prelude To Perfection

    I honestly didn’t understand what I was buying at the time, says Ryan Seiler of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that has no problem acknowledging that. In reality, he didn’t even understand how to drive a manual vehicle. He looks back in the car literally and figuratively and he can’t help but smile because what started as a child’s toy, turned into a man’s accomplishment.Perfectly

    Ryan purchased this car when he was just 15 years old. His father went with him and in reality had to test drive the car for him. The two liked the vehicle and Ryan’s father gave his nod of approval, therefore the purchase was made. The only thing left was to obtain the car returning to its new home, which was greater than a few miles away. Now, rather than his father driving it, Ryan climbed into the driver seat and fired her up. I somehow miraculously drove it 80 miles home, Ryan recalls. He started cleaning the car up and was very pleased with all the results, as soon as he got it home. The car cleaned up great, the inner was mint, it ran great and the best part of all, there was minimal rust for a South Dakota car.

    Ryan made a decision to start looking deeper into his new Prelude and find out more about his new purchase. What he discovered excited and surprised him. Upon research I discovered we had happened across a rare Honda find with it as being a 4ws model and in such nice condition. Most importantly, though, the vehicle ran so well that it provided Ryan by using a flawless two years of daily driving. That is, until one fine summer day when a motorcycle ran an end sign and t-boned him. That’s right, the motorcycle t-boned him! But rather than being discouraged, Ryan embraced the accident as an opportunity and redid the entire car in the factory Phoenix Red paint. Using the car freshly repainted, Ryan decided to buy a daily driver so that he could preserve the Prelude and have it last forever, as-is. Ryan and a team of friends decided to make a journey to Import Alliance in Nashville, Tennessee, though for all we realize, that could have and could have happened.

    We were completely blown away, reminisces Ryan. I bought to see the cars I followed online, read about inside the magazines, and a lot of other vehicles that were just over the top. I loved every minute of it plus it provided a lot of inspiration in my opinion. The bug hit Ryan so hard that within a week of returning from IA he began tearing the automobile apart. His plans were relatively mild as he designed to do a mild shave and tuck with the B20a5 engine, but that changed instantly when he found a killer deal on another ’91 Prelude that had a motor on its way out. I thought my original interior was in mint condition but somehow this car topped it. So for $350 it was an easy decision to make. He took what he needed and even drove the car for a few months before turning around and selling it for a bit of a profit. The money from the sale was going to check out the purchase of an H22 swap, but after having a conversation with a couple of people-myself included-he went with an F20B swap.To Perfection

    He took the car, sans motor, to his friend Ryan B’s shop where he had him commence executing what Ryan had envisioned. I didn’t get too crazy with it. I left a lot of the OEM structure and just filled the unnecessary holes and smoothed every one of the seams. It came out exactly how I pictured it, Ryan states. As the engine bay work was being done, he was collecting all of the parts to compliment the motor. A custom intake sends air via a Spoon Sports throttle body to a K-series RBC intake manifold mated to the F20B by a QSD adaptor plate. The exit path commences with a coated Bisimoto header and continues through a custom exhaust system consisting of a remarkable Performance 18-inch resonator along with a Stealth muffler. AEM Electronics was called upon for their tried and true Engine Position Module (EPM) that replaces the stock distributor and sends power to the coil- on-plug conversion all overseen by an AEM Series 2 EMS. Enabling everything to work together is a custom Rywire engine harness. A rare Feel’s shift knob is attached to a Hybrid Racing shift box that Ryan had to tailor to match his chassis/motor combination together with shifter cables to control the coveted T2T4 SiR LSD transmission. As we discussed, Ryan planned to use the ideal components available for this build, even if that meant the need to customize them to work in this setting. And don’t think that Ryan neglected what you cannot see. Besides the KSport Type RR coilovers with aggressive 16K front and 14K rear spring rates, Ryan replaced each and every bushing in addition to ball joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings; and then he cleaned up and powdercoated every suspension component while they were out.

    By just restoring and modifying a third-gen Prelude, Ryan knew his build would get noticed in a crowd. But he set out to build something different while using good quality components instead of settling for anything less. The results speak for themselves – the car is gorgeous. Upon first glance it simply looks like a refreshed third-gen Prelude, but when you take a close look you realize that there is far more than meets the eye.To PerfectionTo Perfection
